And whenever it was said ˹to you˺, ‘Surely Allah’s promise ˹of judgment˺ is true and there is no doubt about the Hour,’ you said ˹mockingly˺, ‘We do not know what the Hour is! We think it is no more than speculation, and we are not convinced ˹that it will ever come˺.’"

### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary

And when it was said to them: "Surely Allah's promise is true, and there is no doubt regarding the Hour of Resurrection," you were wont to say: “We do not know what the Hour (of Resurrection) is. We are simply making conjectures and are not at all certain.”[1]

_Dipnotlar_
- [1] The people mentioned in (verse 24 )above were those who denied the Hereafter openly and absolutely, here those who are not sure of it although they do not deny its possibility because of conjecture. Apparently there is a vast difference between the two groups in that one of them denies the Hereafter absolutely and the other regards it as possible on the basis of conjecture. But as for the result and final end, there is no difference between them, for the moral consequences of the denial of the Hereafter and of lack of the faith in it are the same. A person, whether he disbelieves in the Hereafter or lacks faith in it, will in either case be inevitably devoid of the feeling of accountability before God, and this lack of feeling will necessarily involve him in the error and deviation of thought and action. Only faith and belief in the Hereafter can keep a man on the right track in the world. In the absence of it, both doubt and denial give him a similar attitude of irresponsibility, and since this same attitude of irresponsibility is the real cause of man’s being doomed in the Hereafter, therefore neither the denier of it can escape Hell nor the one who lacks faith in it.

### Abdul Haleem

When it was said to you, "God’s promise is true: there is no doubt about the Hour," did you not reply, “We know nothing of the Hour. This is only conjecture in our opinion. We are not convinced”?’

### Taqi Usmani

and when it was said to you that Allah’s promise is true and there is no doubt in the (arrival of the) Hour, you used to say, ‘We do not know what the Hour is. We do not think (about it) but as an assumption, and we are not sure.’"

### Abdullah Yusuf Ali

"And when it was said that the promise of Allah was true, and that the Hour- there was no doubt about its (coming), ye used to say, 'We know not what is the hour: we only think it is an idea, and we have no firm assurance.'"

### Mahmoud Ghali

And when it was said, ‘Surely the promise of Allah is true, and the Hour, there is no suspicion about it you said, ‘In no way do we realize what the Hour is; decidedly we surmise about it (just) a surmise; and in no way have we reached certitude. ' "

### Arthur John Arberry

And when it was said, "God's promise is true, and the Hour, there is no doubt of it," you said; "We know not what the Hour may be; we have only a surmise, and are by no means certain. "

### E. Henry Palmer

And when it was said, "Surely the promise of Allah is true and as for the Hour, there is no doubt about it", you said, "We do not know what the Hour is; we do not think that it will come to pass save a passing thought, and we are not convinced. "

### George Sale

And when it was said unto you, verily the promise of God is true; and as to the hour of judgment, there is no doubt thereof: Ye answered, we know not what the hour of judgment is: We hold an uncertain opinion only; and we are not well assured of this matter.

### Bijan Moeinian

Remember when it was said that: "God’s promises is true and the upcoming Resurrection is inevitable" you used to recourse to any excuse saying: “We are not sure about it, we do not know when it will happen and how can we accept something that has not happened on the basis of a guess?”

### Amatul Rahman Omar

`And when it was said (to you), "The promise of Allâh is of course true and the Hour (of Resurrection) there is no doubt about it," you said, "We do not know what the Hour may be, we have only a faint notion about it and we are, by no means, convinced (of its certainty)". '

### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira

Whenever it was said: 'God's promise is certainly true, and there is no doubt about the Hour,' you replied: 'We know not what the Hour is. We have only a vague idea, but are not certain.'

### Muhammad Asad

for when it was said, ‘Behold, God’s promise always comes true, and there can be no doubt about [the coming of] the Last Hour’ - you would answer, ‘We do not know what that Last Hour may be: we think it is no more than an empty guess, and [so] we are by no means convinced!’"

### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab

"And when it was related to you by Our Messenger that the promise of Allah is the absolute truth and that the predetermined final Hour is an undoubted and inevitable event, you always stated explicitly": "We do not profess to know what the predetermined final Hour is, nor do we recognize it; in effect our opinion of it is only a supposition formed on grounds admittedly insufficient".

### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley)

And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour [is coming] - no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.' "

### Syed Vickar Ahamed

"And when it was said: 'Verily, that the Promise of Allah was true, and the Hour— There was no doubt about its (coming:)' You used to say: 'We do not know what is the Hour: We only think it is conjecture (merely an idea), and we have no assurance (about it). ' "
