Meyd, "gidip gelme, sallanma, sarsılma" anlamlarına gelmektedir. Bu sebeple kelimenin geçtiği üç ayete, "sizi sarsmasın diye sabit dağlar yerleştirdi" şeklinde meal verilmekte, bu da dağların bulunduğu bölgelerde deprem olmadığı gibi bir yanlış anlamaya sebep olmaktadır. Oysa ayetteki (أَن تَمِيدَ بِكُمْ) en temide bikum" ifadesini "sizi sarsar diye" şeklinde çevirmek metne daha uygun olacaktır. Dolayısıyla ayetin meali "sizi sarsar diye yere sabit dağlar yerleştirdi" şeklinde olmalıdır. Ayette insanları sarsacak olan "yeryüzü"dür (الأرض). Dağların varlığı insanları bu sarsıntı esnasında korumak, daha güvenli bir yerleşim yeri oluşturmak içindir. Ayette dağların yeri sabitlemesinden bahsedilmemektedir. Nitekim toprak, kum ve alüvyonlu kıyı kesimlerin depremlerde en uzun süreli sarsıntı yaratan, sarsıntının şiddetinin en büyük, hızının en fazla olduğu bölgeler olduğu, dağlık ve kayalık alanlarda ise bu sarsıntıların çok daha kısa ve yavaş olduğu yerbilimleri tarafından da tespit edilmiş gerçeklerdir.
