And even if I am returned to my Lord, I will find at Him good things for me." Surely, We will inform the rejecters of all they had done, and We will let them taste the severe retribution. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And if We let him taste mercy after an affliction touches him, he will say: “This is mine; and I think not that the Hour will come — and if I am brought back to my Lord, mine will be the best with Him!” But We will inform those who ignore warning about what they did, and We will let them taste of a stern punishment. ### Aisha Bewley But if We let him taste mercy from Us after he has suffered hardship, then he says, ‘This is my due. I do not think that the Hour is going to come. And even if I am returned to my Lord, I will find at Him good things for me." And I do not think the Hour (the Day of Judgment) is going to occur. And even if I am brought back to my Lord, I will surely have the best (life) with Him (too)."So, We will let the disbelievers know what they did, and let them taste a stern punishment. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And if We bestow Our Mercy upon him after hardship, he will surely say: "This is what I truly deserve,[1] and I do not believe that the Hour (of Resurrection) will ever come to pass; and if I am returned to my Lord, there too I shall enjoy the best." Surely We shall fully apprise the unbelievers of what they have done, and We shall certainly make them taste a severe chastisement. _Dipnotlar_ - [1] That is, I have gotten all this because of my being worthy of it. Then, We verily, will show to the disbelievers what they have done, and We shall make them taste a severe torment. ### Abdul Haleem Whenever We let him taste some of Our mercy after he has been afflicted, he is sure to say, ‘This is all my own doing: I do not think the Hour will ever come, but even if I were to be taken back to my Lord, the best reward would await me with Him.’ We shall most certainly inform the disbelievers of what they have done and give them a taste of severe torment. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali When we give him a taste of some Mercy from Ourselves, after some adversity has touched him, he is sure to say, "This is due to my (merit): I think not that the Hour (of Judgment) will (ever) be established; but if I am brought back to my Lord, I have (much) good (stored) in His sight!" I cannot imagine the Hour will come. And even if I go back to my Lord, there will surely still be the best for me with Him." We shall tell those who do not believe what they used to do, and inflict on them a heavy punishment. ### Ali Quli Qarai And if We let him have a taste of Our mercy after distress has befallen him, he will surely say, ‘This is my due! I do not think the Hour will ever set in, and in case I am returned to my Lord, I will indeed have the best [reward] with Him. ’ But We will surely inform the faithless about what they have done, and will surely make them taste a harsh punishment. ### Amatul Rahman Omar Yet if We show him mercy from Ourselves after he has suffered affliction, he will surely say, `This is my due. I do not believe that the (promised) Hour will (ever) come (to be established). And if I am (at all) brought back to my Lord, I shall of course, have with Him the very best (of all the goodly things). Yet (on the Day of Requital) We will surely tell those who disbelieve plainly all that they did, and accordingly We will make them suffer a terrible punishment. ### Bijan Moeinian When God, out of mercy, changes the man’s unfortunate situation, he says: "I deserve it"; then he [becomes rebellious and] denies the Resurrection. Then he says: “If by any chance I am brought back to my Lord, I have been good enough to be rewarded.” The fact of the matter is I (God) will inform the disbelievers of all their deeds and punish them severely. ### Hamid S. Aziz And verily, if We make him taste mercy from Us after distress that has touched him, he would say, "This is of me, and I do not think the Hour will come to pass, and if I am sent back to my Lord, I shall have with Him sure good. " But We will most certainly inform the disbelievers of all that which they did, and We will most certainly make them taste of hard chastisement. ### George Sale And if We cause him to taste mercy from Us, after affliction hath touched him, he surely saith, this is due to me on account of my deserts: I do not think the hour of judgment will ever come; and if I be brought before my Lord, I shall surely attain, with Him, the most excellent condition. But We will then declare unto those who shall not have believed, that which they have wrought; and We will surely cause them to taste a most severe punishment. ### Mahmoud Ghali And indeed, in case We cause him to taste mercy from Us even after tribulation has touched him, indeed he will definitely say, "This is for me; and in no way do I expect that the Hour is comig up. And indeed in case I am returned to my Lord, surely the fairest reward in His Providence will indeed be for me." Then indeed, We will definitely fully inform the ones who have disbelieved of whatever they have done, and indeed We will definitely let them taste of (Our) harsh torment. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And if We should extend to man Our mercy and make him taste Our benefaction and benediction following what had befallen him of a misfortune, he ventures to say: " This is the meritorious outcome of my thought which ran before my action and I doubt if the alleged Eventful Hour will ever present itself, and if I happen to be resurrected and return back to Allah, my Creator, there and then and at His hands shall I merit the desert of good. In effect there and then We will inform those who denied Allah, and refused to acknowledge His Omnipotence and Authority, of the detailed particulars of their life and We will subject them to a condign punishment which doubles their torment. ### Muhammad Asad Yet whenever We let him taste some of Our grace after hardship has visited him, he is sure to say, "This is but my due!" - and, “I do not think that the Last Hour will ever come: but if [it should come, and] I should indeed be brought back unto my Sus­tainer, then, behold, the ultimate good awaits me with Him! But [on the Day of Judgment] We shall most cer­tainly give those who were bent on denying the truth full understanding of all that they ever did, and shall most certainly give them [thereby] a taste of suffering severe. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And truly, if We give him a little bit of mercy from Ourselves, after some pain (and anxiety) has come to him, he is sure to say, "This is due to my (deserving it the most): I do not think that the Hour (of Judgment) will (ever) be established; But if I am brought back to my Lord, surely, I have (enough) good (stored) in His Sight!" But We will show the unbelievers the truth of all that they did, and We shall give them the taste of a severe penalty. ### Shabbir Ahmed And when We let him taste Grace from Us after some hurt that has touched him, he says, "This is from, and for, me. I think not that the Time will ever rise (to go against me). And if I am indeed brought back before my Lord, then, behold, with Him is even better return for me." (I shall be favored there as I am favored here). But We certainly will tell the ungrateful all that they did. And certainly We will make them taste heavy punishment. ('Ma Li' = For me, from me. 'As-Sa'ah' = The Hour = Resurrection = Revolution = Turn of fortunes = Time (18:36)). ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And if We let him taste mercy from Us after an adversity which has touched him, he will surely say, "This is [due] to me, and I do not think the Hour will occur; and [even] if I should be returned to my Lord, indeed, for me there will be with Him the best.
