In short, such are the people who have coolly considered and weighed the pleasures of this world against the joys of the next world, and decided in favor of this world: therefore, they readily sacrifice the interest of the next world whenever there is a clash between the two. - [2] That is, "They do not want to follow the Way of Allah, but endeavor that Allah's Way should follow their desires: it should adjust itself in such a way as to include all their conjectures, theories and whims as its part and parcel, and exclude every creed that does not suit their way of life: it should provide sanction for all their habits, customs and manners: it should not demand from them anything which they do not like: in short, the way of Allah should be their obedient slave and turn in the direction their devilish lusts want it to turn: nay, it should neither criticize them nor ask them to follow Allah’s injunctions. This is their condition for accepting the guidance of Allah. ### Taqi Usmani to those who prefer the worldly life to the Hereafter and prevent (people) from the way of Allah, and seek to make it crooked. Those have gone too far in straying. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran ˹They are˺ the ones who favour the life of this world over the Hereafter and hinder ˹others˺ from the Way of Allah, striving to make it ˹appear˺ crooked. It is they who have gone far astray. ### Bijan Moeinian Those who prefer this worldly life to Life after death, prefer dirt roads which lead to nowhere to God’s highway. They are indeed wrong. ### Hamid S. Aziz Those who love the life of this world better than the Hereafter, and turn folks from the path of Allah, and crave to make it crooked; these are far astray. ### Ali Quli Qarai —those who prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter, and bar [others] from the way of Allah, and seek to make it crooked. They are in extreme error. ### Amatul Rahman Omar Such as prefer the present life to the Hereafter, and forsake the path of Allâh and hinder (the people) from it, and try to paint it as crooked, seeking to undertake it by remaining crooked. It is these who have gone far off in error. ### Mahmoud Ghali The ones who (show) love for the present life (Literally: the lowly life, i. e., the life of this world) over the Hereafter, and bar from the way of Allah, and inequitably seek to make it crooked, those are in far error. ### E. These and their like are indeed lost in the maze of error. ### Muhammad Asad awaits those who choose the life of this world as the sole object of their love, preferring it to [all thought of] the life to come, and who turn others away from the path of God and try to make it appear crooked. Such as these have indeed gone far astray! ### Shabbir Ahmed They choose the life of this world as the sole object of their love, preferring it to the life to come, and debar people from the Path of Allah. (They oppose reform in order to protect their vested interests). They try to make the Straight Path crooked. They have indeed gone far astray! ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) The ones who prefer the worldly life over the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allah, seeking to make it (seem) deviant.
