I am the Messenger of Allâh unto you, confirming the Taurât [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.[1] But when he (Ahmad i.e. Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to them with clear proofs, they said: "This is plain magic."[2] ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And call[1] to mind when Jesus, son of Mary, said: "O Children of Israel, I am Allah's Messenger to you, I verify the Torah which has come before me,[2] and I give you the glad tiding of a Messenger who shall come after me, his name being Ahmad."[3] Yet when he came to them with Clear Signs they said: “This is sheer trickery.”[4] _Dipnotlar_ - [1] This relates to the second disobedience of the children of Israel. The first disobedience they committed in the beginning of their great era of power and prosperity, and this second towards the very end of it, after which they came under the wrath and curse of God for ever and ever. The object of relating these two events here is to warn the Muslims of the consequences of adopting the attitude of disobedience towards their Prophet as the Israelites had adopted towards their Prophet. - [2] This sentence has three meanings and all three are correct: - [3] (1) That I have not brought any new religion, but the same religion that the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) had brought. I have not come to repudiate the Torah, but to confirm it just as the Messengers of God have always been confirming the Messengers who came before them. Therefore, there is no reason why you should hesitate to acknowledge my apostleship. - [4] (2) I answer to the good news that is there in the Torah about my advent. Therefore, instead of opposing me you should receive, and welcome me as the one whose coming had been foretold by the former Prophets. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when Jesus son of Mary said: O Children of Israel! Lo! I am the messenger of Allah unto you, confirming that which was (revealed) before me in the Torah, and bringing good tidings of a messenger who cometh after me, whose name is the Praised One. " Yet when he has come to them with clear proofs, they say: "This is only magic." ### Muhammad Asad And [this happened, too,] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said: "O children of Israel! Behold, I am an apostle of God unto you, [sent] to confirm the truth of whatever there still remains of the Torah, and to give [you] the glad tiding of an apostle who shall come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad. " But when he [whose coming Jesus had foretold] came unto them with all evidence of the truth, they said: "This [alleged message of his] is [nothing but] spellbinding eloquence!" ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And (remember) when, Isa (Jesus), the son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Children of Israel! I am a messenger of Allah (sent) to you, reaffirming Torah (the Torah, that came) before me, and giving the good news of a Messenger (reference to the Prophet Muhammad) to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad. " But when he (the Prophet) came to them with clear proofs, they said, "This is clearly magic (aimed at deception)!" ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And for once, said Isa, son of Maryam : "O Bani Isreal (Children of Isreal);" "I am the Messenger of Allah who has been sent to you to corroborate your faith in AL-Tawrah which is set before me and to confirm what it foretold of whose turn he is to come. And here I come to comfort your hearts and announce to you the joyful tidings of whose turn he is next to come, a Messenger named Ahmad". But when he -Ahmad- came confirming what Isa foretold and presented them and the Pagans with clear Divine evidence serving as a ground for belief, they said: "This is only sorcery assumed by him -by Muhammad -". ### Shabbir Ahmed And (the same happened when) Jesus son of Mary said, "O Children of Israel! Behold, I am a Messenger of Allah unto you. I confirm the Divine Origin of the Torah, and give you the glad news of a Messenger to come after me whose name shall be Ahmad (the Praised One.") But when he has come unto them with the self-evident Truth, the People of the Scripture say, "It is obviously a magical lie." ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, "O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Aúmad.
